This is How I Do It

I wanted to give you a proper look inside Plein Air Abstracts Part 1, so I've opened up the first lesson. It's not a trailer, and it's not a watered-down sample, it's the real thing, the full Walk & Draw method, taught exactly as it is in the complete course.

Come and paint with me and see how it feels. It might surprise you.

Walk. Look. Respond.

When you walk through a landscape, you're taking in everything, the moving clouds, the grasses, the birds flying. It's a deeply sensory experience. And that's exactly what your painting needs.

The goal isn't a perfect replica. It's a sensory sketch, loose, gestural, layered.

You're responding to what's around you, not copying it.

Two pencils, a sketchbook, and a walk through the landscape. That's all it takes to find your mark. A couple of 6B–8B pencils, one chunky, one finer and a sketchbook. Simple tools, big results.

As you walk and draw, your eye gets stronger. You start noticing the difference between round flowers and dash-shaped ones, the way dried grass moves, a tiny bird reduced to a single mark on the page. That's enough. That is the drawing.

You're not trying to copy what's in front of you. You're learning to respond to it.

That's the heart of the Walk & Draw method, and where your own mark starts to come through.

Hi, I’m Sam — a landscape artist lucky enough to call the rolling hills of South West England my home.

As a child, I’d hop on my bike and disappear down country lanes with a sketchbook tucked under my arm, trying to capture the wild beauty around me. I didn’t want perfect drawings — I wanted energy, movement, and that feeling you get when nature stirs something inside you. Maybe you’ve felt that too?

But like so many artists, I struggled with perfectionism. I thought I had to get it “right” — until I learned that the real magic happens when you let go. When you make space for mistakes, loosen your grip, and trust your instincts. That’s when my work began to change… and so did I.

  • Winner of the Ronald Searle Award for Creativity
  • Long-listed for the Kate Greenaway Award
  • Winner of the 2020 Brownston Gallery Award

What matters most to me is this: helping you experience the same creative freedom I fought so hard to find.

I made this course to share everything that transformed my art — from the techniques to the mindset shifts — so you can stop holding back and start creating with joy, energy, and confidence.

Can’t wait to see what you create!

Love Sam x
