Course Description

We all need new inspiration, whatever stage we are at on our creative journey! Throughout this course, I’ll introduce you to three of the most transformative steps that set my own art practice free.

Techniques Taught:

- Expressive drawing to capture movement

- Mark-making using ink on location

- Tonal techniques for creating dramatic landscapes

- Innovative approaches to simplifying the landscape, paving the way for abstraction

- Sketchbook strategies for exploring composition

3 Easy Steps

In three simple lessons I'll introduce you to drawing and mark-making exercises that can help you to loosen up and let go of more rigid, traditional approaches.

Walk and Draw

Lesson 1 / Walk & Draw

We begin by freeing up your drawing. This is where you start to shake off the traditional techniques of realism, such as perspective and horizon points. Instead, we focus on drawing with a sense of play and exploration. We concentrate on texture and scale to create drawings with depth and interest.

Lesson 2 / Develop Your Mark-Making

This is the part where we leave behind the overwhelm and simplify our kit so that we are free to explore the realms of expressive mark making. With one simple ink and a couple of brushes your creativity is set free to play and experiment. We explore tone and texture, which are fundamental to creating rich, powerful pieces of art

Lesson 3 / Composition & Scale

Our final lesson shows us the beauty of working in multiples. You no longer need to feel the pressure of perfectionism, as this will hinder your growth. By working across three sketchbooks, we speed up our learning, and we let go of the fear that a single study has to be perfect. Instead, we adopt a learner's attitude and explore the endless ways we can push composition and focal points in our sketches

Final Note...

Just like you, I had a dream.

I imagined creating dramatic abstract landscapes full of spontaneity and energy. The calling was so deep and instinctive that I knew there was no other true path. But my vision far exceeded my ability!

Even though I had worked in illustration I needed to become

a student again. I had to go back to the beginning…

My first real breakthrough happened by accident. Each morning I’d pack a sketchbook and pencil for my daily dog walk but ‘Monty’ my Hungarian Visla wouldn’t let me sit. So I began to draw as I was walked!

I instantly saw a shift in my sketches. They were loose and fast.

Expressive and wild. I loved them.

This simple change opened the door to a whole new approach.

I began to use movement and action in my art. I realised that by working WITH my environment and embracing its changing qualities, I created marks that captured a more dynamic sense of place.

From sketches to ink studies, and then to larger-scale paintings, I applied the same approach. Keeping things simple, responding not replicating and maintaining a playful mindset. One that embraces the wilder side of art making.
